The history of Motanka, a traditional Ukrainian guardian doll.

The history of Motanka, a traditional Ukrainian guardian doll.

Motankas (Мотанка) are ancient Ukrainian family talismans. They are the symbol of prosperity, goodness and hope. Then first knotted dolls appeared about 5,000 years ago, and represented the unity of the family and deep connection between multiple generations.

The name "motanka" comes from the word “motaty” (to wind) ie to make a knotted doll out of fabric, without using a needle and scissors. Motanka served as a talisman of human destiny and our ancestors believed that destiny cannot be pierced or cut. Generally dolls were in the shape of a human figure, usually a woman or a child, and were made from pieces of fabric from old clothes of family members connected by knots.

Ukrainian Vinok - when beauty and tradition intertwine

Ukrainian Vinok - when beauty and tradition intertwine

Vinok is one of the oldest symbols of Ukraine.  Described in songs and legends, Ukrainian vinok has a long history - first mentioned in Shumerian culture in XII-III BC. Viewed as a symbol of bright sky above the head of the one wearing it and seen as protector from evil spirits and illnesses. Our Ukrainian ancestors understood that the part of body responsible for thinking and creation was the head, and therefore created vinok - oberih (guardian) to protect it from negative forces.

Feature Product - Namysto/Korali

Namysto (Busy, Korali) are one of the oldest forms of feminine ornaments in Ukraine. There is a long history of Ukrainian women wearing beaded jewelry, and the ways that namysto was worn has evolved through the centuries together with its styles, colours and materials used.

Namysto bares more than just a decorative element- it’s meaning is symbolic. It was believed to be protective from ill wishes and bad people and was passed on from generation to generation, as family heirloom.
