The design of this buckle is inspired by ancient runic motifs that were widely used by the peoples of Northern Europe before becoming incorporated into the cultural traditions and mythology of the early Slavic peoples living in what is now Ukraine.

 Prince Volodymyr the Great belonged to the Rurik dynasty, whose legendary origins are sometimes traced to the Scandinavian hero Sigurd-Odin. In Norse mythology, Odin is credited with discovering the hidden meaning of the runes, making them powerful symbols of wisdom, protection, and strength.
